Joy in fine line script
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A continuous single-line script design spelling the word joy, with a small dot above the j. The linework is thin and even, with a looped letter e and a sweeping stroke that joins the letters. The design is drawn in black on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

Sit closer, the stove's still warm, and I'll tell it the way my uncle told it to me, though he always swore the clerk had a moustache, which I doubt. The crossing at Halden Pass had one gate, one stamp and one rule nobody had written down. A traveller could carry anything across so long as it could be written in a single line, without the pen leaving the paper. Lists were refused. Names were refused unless they were short. Most people gave up and went round by the river.

One February a girl walked up to the window with a torn ticket and a pencil borrowed from a carter. The clerk, Tomas Ilse, had hands like cold bread, and he looked at her as if she'd asked to carry the weather across. She said she wanted to cross with a word. He told her she could try. She bent over the counter, tongue between her teeth, and drew a loop, a swoop and a tail that rose and fell, never lifting the lead. When she finished she said it aloud: 'Joy.' He read it back slowly, the way you'd read a word from a dream, and found he couldn't say no to it.
'Where's it going?' he asked. 'Nowhere,' she said. 'It stays with me. I only needed someone to check it was real.' He stamped the ticket. Then he tore off a fresh one, wrote a word of his own in one wobbling line, and asked her to carry it across for him. She agreed. Nobody knows what it said, and she never came back to tell.
The ticket hangs in the booth now, stamp side out. Every spring the new clerk traces that loop with his finger before he lets anyone through, the way you'd touch a doorframe for luck.
