The envelope had been forwarded twice, once from her mother's old house in Leeds and once from a flat in Hull that Margaret had already left, so when Joan finally held it she was almost surprised to find her own name in her own handwriting. Forty-one years of Christmas cards had taught her that loose, slanting capitals meant someone was in a hurry to say something kind. The card inside was blank except for a single line, written in pencil that had been pressed hard enough to dent the paper. One of a kind. No signature. She knew who it was before she turned it over, because Margaret had always finished her sentences with a full stop, as if the world had better take notice.

Joan put the kettle on and stood at the window while it rumbled. The neighbour's cat was sitting on the wall, looking at the rain as though it had personally offended it. She thought about the sixth form common room, the smell of Silk Cut and wet coats, and the day Margaret had told her that the careers adviser wanted them both to become secretaries. Margaret had laughed so hard she had to sit on the radiator. Joan had never quite forgiven her for being right about how the world would try to fold them down into smaller shapes.

The reunion was on Saturday at the Working Men's Club on Harrow Street, a place with a carpet that had seen better decades. Joan had almost decided not to go. Then she found the pencil in the kitchen drawer and wrote on the back of the card, in the same loose hand, just three words: Save me a seat. She posted it that afternoon, before she could tidy it into something polite.
