Fine line script tattoo on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the upper back and shoulder of a person, with their hair falling over the top of the frame and their face not visible. A thin, handwritten script tattoo in black ink runs diagonally across the shoulder, and only part of the wording is legible. The image is monochrome, with soft focus on the hair and a plain, pale background that keeps attention on the lettering.

Snow had closed the pass for three days, and the Hollin Cross inn was full of people with nothing to do but wait. Mother Agathe kept the fire banked and the ledger open, and she would not let anyone sleep in the back room with the broken latch. Nell, who was twelve and had been told to stop asking questions, carried the coal in each morning and counted the candles left in the box.

On the fourth night a traveller came in stamping, a tall man with a wooden case under one arm. He asked for a bed and a pen. He wrote a single line on the back of a reckoning slip, folded it small, and pressed it into Nell's hand with a coin. "Take this up the lane to the woman with the blue gate," he said. "Give it to her only when the road is open, and only if she asks for it." Then he climbed the stairs, and Nell did not see him come down.
The road opened on the ninth morning. Nell walked the lane with the slip in her mitten and found the blue gate already swinging. The woman behind it had grey hair tied with string and a face that had been waiting a long time for something. She asked, in a voice like a hinge that had not been oiled, whether anyone had left her a message. Nell gave it over. The woman read it once, then again, and laughed the way people do when they have been holding their breath for years.
Nell never learned what the line said. Every winter after, when the snow came down the valley and the inn was full of strangers, she breathed on the kitchen window until the glass fogged, and wrote the first few letters in the frost with her finger. She left the rest blank for whoever came in from the cold to finish.
