Script quote across a shoulder and upper back
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A sepia photograph shows a person's bare upper back and shoulder, with their head turned down and hair falling forward so the face is not visible. A fine black script quote, lights will guide you home followed by an ellipsis, runs diagonally across the skin from the shoulder towards the shoulder blade. The soft, warm tones and shallow focus keep attention on the thin lettering against the skin.

You stand at the pit head gate in the grey before six, counting lamps the way your mother counts spoons after a visitor. Forty-one checks on the board, forty-one men below or on their way. Your own brass disc is the one you flipped over last night and never flipped back. Eli Rowlands has walked off with his shift for the second time this month, and the overman says a boy who can't keep time shouldn't be trusted with anyone's light.

The lamp-room smells of paraffin and wet wool. Your sister Nell brought you a flask at five and said the wind had got into the chapel roof again, and that Dad would want the back gate bolted. You bolt nothing. You fill the oil wells, trim the wicks with the little scissors, and hold each one to the bulb to see if it draws. Every flame stands up straight, the way it should.
When the cage bell rings at half six, the men come up grey as ash and the first thing they ask is whether anyone's seen a fire on the top road. Nobody has. Eli comes out last, coughing, helmet under his arm. He doesn't thank you. He nods at the shelf where the spare lamps stand in a row, every one lit, and says you kept them burning, which is the only thanks a pit village has ever known how to give.
That night you walk home with the lamp you carried, holding it up at the crossroads so the far end of the row can see which house is yours. At the top of the hill, the front window has the gas turned up low, and it answers you.
