Close up of a fine line script word tattooed in black ink along the forearm, shown in a warm, vintage-toned photograph.

Fine line script word on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm is shown in close up with a single word written in thin, cursive black script across the lower arm towards the wrist. The linework is even and delicate, with no shading, and the ink reads as dark grey-black against the skin. The warm, faded tones of the photograph and the plain pale background keep the focus on the lettering.

Dear Anna,

The snow shut the Kessel Pass on Tuesday, so the carrier who should have brought the wafers from Lienz will not be coming before Easter. Father Josef asked me to make do. I have made do, as you always said I would, with the miller's flour and water from the spring behind the church.

Yesterday he stood at the altar with a heel of black bread on the paten while the whole village crammed into the nave, stamping their boots to keep the feeling in their toes. He broke it with his thick fingers and it cracked louder than he meant it to. Old Hansi laughed, then crossed himself, then wept, and nobody could tell which of the three had come first.

Lukas, the cheesemaker's boy, sat at the back with his hands tucked under his thighs, the way he has since he was small. When the bread reached him he took it in both hands, careful as if it might fly off, and then he looked at the window where the pass lies buried. I think he is counting the days until someone with a mule and some courage opens the road. I hope he lives to be as surprised by ordinary bread as I was.

Write soon and tell me the road is open. Yours, Marta
