Fine line star constellation on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a dotted line linking five tiny star shapes runs diagonally across the inner upper arm. The linework is fine and even, in dark ink with no shading. The soft-focus background and white sleeve keep the focus on the small design, which sits on pale skin.

You have been selling charts since the rain set in at half eight, and the awning above your trestle sags in the middle like a hammock holding wet coal. Nobody wants a celestial map in March. A man in an orange cagoule lifts a 1920s school atlas, turns it over as though the back might have a price written on it, and sets it down again.

Then comes the girl. She is perhaps nine, a carrier bag of coins clutched in both fists, and she asks for the bit of sky that sits low over the sea, the one her gran calls the stepping stones. You know the one. Five stars in a loose diagonal, the middle pair closer together, as if someone hopped across a burn and thought better of it. You find it on the chart with your thumbnail, then uncap a biro and draw a dotted line between them so she can follow the route.
"That's the way home," she says. "Gran says if the fog comes in off the harbour you don't look at the lights. You count the stars and step where they are." You want to tell her that stars do not move with the weather, that the chart is only paper and a guess at distance. Instead you fold the sheet along its old crease and give it to her for nothing, because her coins are damp and she has already counted out the whole sum.
Afterwards you pack the stall in the rain, sliding the charts into their sleeves one by one. The last one you hold up to the streetlight. Someone has drawn a dotted line through those stars, and it is not your pen. It runs from the sea wall up to the tin-roofed chapel, faint and careful, as if a small hand wanted the road to stay put.
