The chart was wrong about the Plough again, or I was reading it wrong in the rain. Ruth had the torch, and she held it low so the paper wouldn't sweat through, while I counted stars off the back of my wrist like a girl counting sheep. Seven dots on the outer arm, two on the other, and a gap between them where the tide had taken the rest. We were on the slipway at Harrow Cross with the boats knocking together below us, and the market stalls behind us had their awnings pulled tight against the drizzle.

She said the dots were a map of where we'd been, not where we were going. I said that was the sort of thing people said when they had no idea. She laughed and told me to hold still, and pressed her cold thumb to the crook of my elbow to find the brightest one. It was the only one she never inked, she said, because you can't pin down the star that's about to move.
Next morning the stall with the tinned peaches and the man who sold paraffin had gone quiet, and the tide had carried the chart out past the breakwater. I still have the torch. I still count from the wrist. Some nights the two arms make the same pattern, and some nights they don't, and I have stopped minding which.
