Fine line state outline on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, showing a single thin black outline tattoo of a state-shaped landmass centred on her upper back. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against her skin tone. The composition is tight, with her long dark hair falling over one shoulder, a fine necklace chain visible at the neck, and a black bra strap framing the design.

Dear Tobias,

The old man has finally let me hold the pen for the coastline, though he stands behind me with his breath smelling of rum and corrects every stroke. Yesterday we spent six hours on the Penobscot alone. It cuts into the land like a river of ink that will not dry, and the bay beyond it is full of islands that look like crumbs dropped from a loaf.
The hardest part is the eastern edge, where the shore breaks into so many inlets that a man could chart it for a lifetime and still find a new cove each spring. Mr Hale says we must draw only what a ship's master would need, so I leave out the tiny fingers of rock and trust the sea to be patient. He says a map is a promise to a stranger, that they will not be wrecked where the paper says there is safe water.
Last Thursday, a fishing boat came in from Mount Desert with a boy aboard who had lost his father on the reef off Cutler. The boy asked to see the map. He traced the western line with a dirty finger, from the New Hampshire border up toward the wide top of the land, and he said, that is where we live. I had not thought of it as a place people live. I had only thought of it as a shape that needed to be right.
I have copied his finger's path into my own book, a single black line with no shading, and I will send it to you folded inside this letter. Keep it somewhere dry. The coast is never finished, but the outline is what people carry home.
Your friend, William
