Three birds on the upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind has three small black bird silhouettes tattooed on the upper back, near the left shoulder blade as she faces away. The birds are simple solid shapes in slightly different angles and sizes, with no fine internal detail. The soft, muted photograph shows a pale wall behind her, with a long blonde braid and white lace bandeau in the frame.

She went out that night with the lamp and watched the birds rise from the wire. They turned once over the ridge, three dark shapes that looked from below like nothing more than pieces of the dusk, and then they were gone over the border stones. In the morning the nest was empty. She folded the letter small, put it in her sleeve, and lifted the gate bar herself.
