Three birds on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph from behind of a woman with a long blonde braid and a white lace bandeau top. Three small solid black bird silhouettes sit on the upper back beside the left shoulder blade, with one bird angled higher and two lower. The bird shapes are simple and clean, with no shading, and the image is in natural colour with the skin tones and background kept muted.

Mr Ashdown, who sleeps in the back room with his boots on, says the lane will open by Sunday if the wind holds off. I have stopped believing him and started counting the tins instead.

Something has been keeping me company at the back window. Three starlings, or possibly swifts, though nobody in January would be daft enough to expect swifts. They come down off the moor at dusk and sit on the wire of the washing line, one a little higher than the other two, as if the top one were keeping watch. This morning they were gone, and I felt foolish for minding.

Then the lane was ploughed at noon by a man on a tractor with a dog that barked at the cat. The first thing down the road was the Carlisle post van, sliding sideways, and the second was Dad's old grey Land Rover with the wipers going. I ran out in my slippers. You would have laughed.

I have left the back window open a crack so they can find their way back, in case. Come home when the road lets you, love. The birds will know you.
