Fine line sunburst and dashes on the arm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The diptych shows the same arm from two angles, with a small sunburst of radiating lines, a short dashed stroke and a tiny star or dot. The linework is very thin and delicate, in black or dark grey ink, with no shading. The tattoos are small and spaced apart on pale skin against a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lock keeper had already gone in for his tea when Mags Tully brought the Constance into the bottom gate at Hythe Bridge. Her hands were cold on the tiller and the last light lay flat along the water, the colour of weak tea. She tied off, stepped onto the beam and counted the paddles under her breath the way her father had taught her, one, two, three, until the gates groaned and the boat began to rise.

Her father had kept a tally on the cabin ceiling in carpenter's pencil: a dash for every lock, a ring for every dawn they had been on the water before the sun cleared the poplars. Mags had added nothing since the funeral. Tonight, rising through the dark, she held the lamp up and saw the ring had faded to a grey smudge, and the dashes crowded round it like cattle at a gate.

At first light she was out again before the kettle boiled, rubbing the brass plate on the tiller with vinegar and an old shirt. Venus had hung over the far bank all night, one bright point that refused to fade. She watched it pale against the sky, then took the stub of pencil from her pocket and made a small dot beside the last dash, where the star belonged.

Further down the cut the sun came up through the willows, and its light flared across the water and into the open hatch. She drew the spokes after it, one fine line at a time, until the whole thing was a wheel above the bunk. Then she untied the lines and let the Constance drift out into the day.
