Fine line black outline tattoo of a peony with a long thin stem on the inner upper arm of a woman in a dark top, against a white wall.

Peony outline on the upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A single peony bloom with a long, thin stem is drawn in black linework on the inner upper arm, with the arm held out horizontally. The lines are even and fine, with no shading, and the petals are described with simple contour lines. The plain white wall behind the arm keeps the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The road out of Caddish ran forty miles of nothing before it found a well, and Hanna walked it with a tin of seed tied to her belt and a sack of bread she meant to share with nobody. She had been told the peony would not grow in sand. Her grandmother had said so, and her grandmother had carried the same tin across the same road, sixty years before, and had buried the seed under a boulder at the halfway cairn because the boulder was the only shade for a hundred miles.

Hanna did not bury hers. A carter named Obed stopped his mule beside her at noon and asked what she was holding so carefully. She showed him the single black seed, round as a pellet, and he laughed until his mule sat down in protest. Then he gave her a cup of water from his skin and told her about his wife, who had once grown a flower so large the neighbours came to look at it, and who had died in the spring before the rains, when the flower dropped every petal in one night, as if it had decided the world was not worth the trouble.

She kept walking. At the cairn she knelt, pressed the seed into the grit below the boulder, and poured the last of her water on it, which was foolish and which she did anyway. Then she drew a line in the dust with a stick: a long, thin stem reaching east, and at its end a round head full of folded petals, the way the seed would want to look if it ever got the chance.

The next morning a green thread was curling up from the stone. By the time Obed came back through with his mule, it had opened one pale pink bloom the size of a fist, and he stood in the road a long while without saying anything at all.
