Fine line wildflower sprig on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black sprig with three small open flowers and several narrow leaves rises from a single long stem. The linework is delicate and even, with little shading, so the design reads as a light botanical outline. The tattoo sits on a bare upper arm against a pale grey background, with a dark top covering the adjacent shoulder and torso.

Dear Tom, it's gone four and the ward is doing that hush it does before the breakfast trolleys start. I'm writing on the back of a drug chart because I forgot to bring paper, which Mum would have something to say about. Mr Okafor in bay three asked me this evening if there were any flowers left on the verge outside the car park, the little white ones with the feathery leaves. He said his wife used to pin them in her hair on Sundays. I told him the grounds people mow that bank every Thursday, so I doubted it, and then I felt daft for saying it.

I went out on my break anyway with a pair of nail scissors from the treatment room. The verge was mostly dock and plantain, but at the far end by the bins there was a clump of something tall and pale, half flattened by the wind. I cut one good stem, long enough that the flower heads sat at the top like three small umbrellas, wrapped it in a damp paper towel and carried it back up the stairs like contraband.

Mr Okafor didn't say anything when I gave it to him. He turned it over slowly, counting the heads with one finger, and then said, "Hedge parsley. Not the same, but close enough to get me through the night." He asked me to put it in the plastic beaker by his bed, and I did, and he fell asleep with his hand resting near it.

The thing is, I know he means his wife is at home and he can't go to her, and I don't know how to say anything useful about that, so I keep checking the beaker. The stem is leaning now and the little heads have dropped a fraction, and I keep thinking I should have cut a longer one. Write back soon. Love, Ruth.
