Black fine line script tattoo reading na mo amituofo along the ribs of a woman wearing a black bra, seen from the side.

Fine script phrase along the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A side view of a torso shows a small black script tattoo running horizontally along the ribs, just below the bra band. The words na mo amituofo are written in thin, even linework with no shading. The ink is black against warm skin, and the framing places the tattoo across the centre of the image with long dark hair falling beside it.

The lamp at the forest shrine had gone out again, and nobody in Harrow Cross wanted to be the one to relight it. Everyone agreed the path went wrong after dark, that the birch trees leaned in to listen and the stream spoke with a voice like a neighbour's. So the job went to Ada Penhallow, the widow of a charcoal burner, who had no fear left to spend on trees.

She took a tinderbox, a jar of lamp oil and her husband's rosary of worn plum seeds. At the shrine she knelt, struck the flint, and began to count the seeds under her thumb, saying the same four words with each one. Na mo amituofo. Her husband had taught her the words in his last winter, when he could no longer lift the sacks, saying they were the name of a light far off that did not mind how late you came to it.

The wick caught. Behind her something moved through the ferns, large and patient, and stopped at the edge of the lamplight. Ada did not turn. She finished the round of beads, then the next, and when she rose the thing had gone, leaving a trail of bent fronds running back toward the village like a line of writing.

She walked home by the same path without hurrying. At the gate, Tomas the baker's boy was waiting with a lantern of his own, shaking. Did you see it, he asked. Yes, said Ada, and it saw me. Now go to bed, Tomas. The lamp is lit, and the light does not mind how late you come home.
