Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of the side of a torso, with a blue fabric top covering the upper part of the frame. A thin black script phrase sits low on the ribcage and appears to read cuatro ochos in a flowing hand. The ink is black only, set against even, natural skin tone.

Nobody in the studio on Calle Feria ever learned the pasodoble the right way round, and Teresa Gil had stopped expecting them to. She counted from the mirror end, with a brass biscuit tin on the piano lid, and every new pupil heard the same thing: cuatro, ochos, then a clap meant to sound like a door shutting. The room sat above a bakery, so the boards smelled of anise and warm flour whenever the shutter was up, and in August the heat came up through the floor like a second partner.

Rafa arrived on a Tuesday with a suitcase of borrowed shoes and a letter from his mother's cousin in Jerez. He could not count. He could not turn. He danced the way a man carries a ladder through a doorway, all elbows and apology, and Teresa made him stand at the barre until he stopped staring at his feet. "Cuatro ochos," she said. "Four eights. Not four things you can see. Eight steps you feel, and four you let go of." He thought she was being poetic. She was being practical.

On the last night of the summer course, the baker's wife climbed the stairs with a tray of polvorones and sat on the top step to watch. Rafa went through the whole sequence without counting out loud, and when he finished, Teresa took one biscuit from the tin and held out the rest. "You stopped counting," she said. "That was the whole lesson. Now go and find out what you were counting for." He set the tin back on the piano and went down the stairs two at a time, and she listened to the sound of him until the shutter came down.
