Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is shown against a bright turquoise painted wall, with black nail polish that has white moon shapes on some nails. Black ink tattoos include an eye design on one finger, a small crescent moon on another, and a larger ornate mandala with dotted and solid detail extending from the wrist onto the back of the hand. The image is sharply lit and the ink is shown in solid black and grey tones.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Third night of the fog, and the moon has finally come through over Carrow Junction, a thin paring of it hanging above the water tower like something nobody remembered to collect. I have trimmed the wick twice. Mrs Pellow from the refreshment room sent up a flask with a note saying the eight-fifteen is forty minutes late and I am to stop staring at the lamp.

The lamp is the one Dad called the eye. Its brass hood has a lens ground so the light opens and shuts like a lid. When I was small he taught me to read the board by its blink: red, a long wait, then green. He said a signal is only a promise that somebody has agreed to keep, and you watch it so nobody has to trust the dark.

Tonight the goods yard shines silver, rain laid along the rails like wire. At half past eleven a single lamp came up the far line, slow, with no whistle. I held my breath until I could make out a handcart, two lads pushing a crate of oil toward the platform and singing something about a girl in Penzance. I showed them green. One of them waved his cap, and the moon slid behind the cutting.

I have written it in the book: 23.42, line clear. Then I drew a small crescent in the margin, the way Dad did, and beside it an open eye. Tomorrow the fog may lift. Until then I will keep the lamp trimmed and the line watched.
