Black fine line tattoo of a heart made of fingerprint swirls, with script reading est. and 9·11·10 on an arm.

Fingerprint heart with est. and date

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A heart formed from fine, swirling black lines that resemble a fingerprint, with shading that gives it depth. The script words est. sit above the heart and the date 9·11·10 runs diagonally along its lower right edge. The design is in black ink only, on smooth skin against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ink pad at Kestle Bridge was older than me, and the man who handed me the card had been holding it so long his thumb had left a grey ghost on the laminate. Eleven years on the desk and I still checked every whorl before I stamped anything. Most people looked away while I rolled their fingers across the glass. He didn't. He watched the screen the way you watch a kettle you've been told will boil.

He had come through with a plastic folder under one arm and a question about his sister's paperwork, which wasn't my department. While the cross-check ran I looked at the sheet he'd slid across the counter. It was a printed heart, spun from a single thumbprint, the lines curling outward like smoke from a struck match. Someone had written est. above it in a slanted hand, and below, along the lower edge, the date in neat black numerals: 9.11.10. He said it was the day his mother had first signed him into her name, and that he'd carried the copy in his coat ever since.

The scanner rejected his thumb. The ridges had worn smooth from years of kitchen work, and the machine kept asking for more pressure than a man should give it. He laughed, a little embarrassed, and started to apologise. I told him to hold still, took his wrist, and pressed the pad gently against the glass myself, rocking the thumb the way my father had taught me to do with a sleeping child. The line came up clean on the second try.

I stamped his form and handed the folder back. He tucked it under his arm without looking at it, the way you'd carry something that was already part of you. Out past the barrier the rain kept falling on the lorries, and the little heart stayed behind on my counter, a fingerprint pretending to be a whole life.
