Anchor and love infinity on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
An anchor is woven into an infinity symbol, with the script word love written in the loop on the right and a small red heart beneath it. The linework is thin and even, with light grey shading along the shank and flukes of the anchor. Black ink dominates the composition, with the red heart as the only colour, set against pale skin.

The Discoveries were the last to come off the top rows, and Dad was already cursing the tide before I got down the orchard with the picking bag knocking against my hip. The wasps were drunk on the windfalls. Below the wall the barge sat low in the brown water, her bow line made fast to the old kedge anchor that had lain in the mud since before my grandfather was born.

Dad had looped the stern rope twice round the Bramley trunk and finished it with a figure of eight. He called it the infinity knot because, he said, it never worked loose under strain and never ran out of length. I asked him once what would happen if the river came up in the night. He said the anchor would hold, and the rope would hold, and whatever was tied to them would stay put until someone came to untie it.
I had a letter in my coat pocket from a college in Leeds. I hadn't told him. He knew anyway, because the post reached the staithe before it reached the house. He said nothing about it. He took the bag from me, tipped the Discoveries into the hold, then dug in his jacket and brought out something small.
It was a windfall, bruised on one side and bright as a cherry. He pressed it into my palm and folded my fingers over it. Keep that, he said. Then he cast off the stern rope and let the ebb take us. I stood on the staithe with the apple warm in my fist, watching the knot slide free of the trunk and the rope run out across the water until it lay slack and loose on the mud.
