The fair left Harrow Mere the night the fiddler's girl stopped singing, and nobody on the wagons would say why. Old Tobias Crane, who ran the swings and the shooting gallery, blamed the weather. The weather had been mild. It was the quiet that bothered him, a quiet that sat on the caravans like wet sheets on a line.

Her name was Nell, and she was nine when she made her father a promise. He had sold his fiddle to pay the farrier for the horse that pulled the organ wagon, and he sat on the step of his caravan with his hands empty, saying he could not go on. Nell took his face between her palms and said, promise me music. He laughed, because it sounded like a line from a song, and he did not promise her anything back.

That winter the fair wintered in a ruined mill near Coldwater, and the fiddler walked out each night to the crossroads where three lanes met. Tobias saw him come back with clefs chalked on his sleeve, a bass and a treble, and a pair of dots set beside them like the eyes of a patient cat. The fiddler said a stranger had given him back his fiddle for a tune he had forgotten he knew.

In spring the fiddle was on the step again, and Nell was singing, loud enough to rattle the brass pipes on the organ. Tobias never learned what the fiddler had given up at the crossroads. He only noticed that when the wind came off the marsh, the organ played two curves meeting in a heart, and the girl sang the low part underneath.
