Fingerprint with musical notes and staves
Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of a fingerprint, with its whorled ridges filled by five-line musical staves, notes and treble clefs. The linework is bold and uneven, with the notes and clefs drawn over the ridge pattern in a single ink. The composition is centred on a plain white background with no colour or shading.

The rain had been coming down on Hallow Cross market since before the bells, and by noon the cobbles ran like pewter between the stalls. Old Maud kept her pie cart under a tarpaulin and her eyes on the fiddler across from her, whose thumb was pressed flat against the wet slate of the chandler's sign. He had done this every market day for a year, and every day the constable came by and asked him to stop.

'You'll have the paint off,' Maud said.
'The paint is only the ground,' said the fiddler. 'Look what the thumb leaves.'
She looked. Where his whorl had pressed into the wet paint, the ridges had settled into lines, five of them, and along the lines small black heads of notes had sunk into the grain like seeds. A treble clef curled at the edge where his knuckle had slipped. Nobody could read it, but the children stood in the rain and hummed it back to him.
The constable came at dusk with a lamp and a ledger and said the whole town had been given over to a thumb. He wanted the print lifted off the sign and filed with the others, so that any man who left a mark on Hallow Cross could be found by his whorls. The fiddler laid his hand on the slate one last time. The rain ran through the ridges and the staves filled with water, and the constable, who could not read music, swore afterwards that the tune rang up out of the drains all the way to the river.
