Circular script inscription design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a circular band of angular, calligraphic script drawn in black ink on a plain white background. The strokes vary in weight, with sweeping tails and curled terminals along the outer edge. The composition is a single unbroken ring with an open centre and no shading or colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The dough had been resting since midnight, and Oswin Tallis could tell by its weight in his palm that it was ready to be shaped. He pressed a thumb into the proof and watched the dent fill slowly, the way his mother used to say a loaf told you when it wanted to be left alone. Outside the window the lane was still black, and the only other light came from the chandler's across the cobbles, where a man was already hammering something bright.

The chandler's man was Pell, who had made rings for the whole valley for forty years and never once made the same one twice. Oswin had taken him his grandmother's band the week before, worn thin as wire, and asked for words cut on the inside. Pell had asked which words. Oswin had not known, so he had said the first thing that came to mind, the name of the street where the bakery stood before the flood. Pell had laughed and said that was no kind of inscription.
Now the band sat on a square of cloth beside the oven door, and Oswin lifted it with floured fingers as the first loaves came out gold and ticking. He turned it toward the glass. The letters ran round the inside in a looping, angular hand, a ring of script with no beginning he could find. He had expected it to read like a sentence. Instead it read like a door left open, and the cold air came in around it.
He set the ring on the sill where the sun would reach it first, then went back to the bench to cut the morning's dough into rounds, each one a little different from the last.
