Dear Ivy, the bindweed has got into the greenhouse again, and I have stopped pretending I am going to win. Last night I went out with the torch and found it had curled round the frame of the old cold frame in three separate spirals, each one tight at the centre as if someone had wound it by hand. Between them, on the gravel, the foxglove seeds had scattered in a line like a brush had been flicked. I counted eleven. I have never been able to count seeds properly, but eleven felt like a message.

Mr Okafor from next door says the curls are what the wind does to the ground when nobody is watching. I told him the wind has never once been that neat. He laughed and said you have to let things run a little. So I have let it run. I cut the lower tendrils and left the upper curls alone, and by morning they had reached the water butt, which I did not know a plant could manage in one night.

Then I found the thing I actually wanted to tell you. Under the butt, in the damp, a drift of tiny black beads had come up overnight, like spilt ink, and they sat exactly where the longest tendril had paused. I brushed them with my thumb and they stuck to the skin like soot. I do not think they are seeds. I think the garden is writing something and has not yet decided what.

Come on Sunday. Bring the good secateurs and tell me if you can read it, because I cannot, and I have been squinting at it since breakfast.
