Fishing rod and trout on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A fishing rod with a reel and dangling line is tattooed along one finger, and a small trout hangs from the line on a neighbouring finger. The rod, reel and outline are drawn in thin black linework, while the trout has red spots and green and blue shading. The hand is photographed against a pale wall and wooden surface, with the tattoos filling the frame.

You have been the lost property clerk at Penrith for eleven years, and the cabinet behind your counter holds everything people leave behind: umbrellas, dentures, a wedding dress in a box marked urgent. The fishing rod arrives on a wet Tuesday, strapped to a canvas bag with a reel that still clicks when you turn it. The luggage tag on the handle says Platform 4, 17:40, Eskdale branch. Nobody claims it.

Nobody claims it for six days. On the seventh, a girl in a school blazer leans over the counter and asks, very seriously, whether anyone has found a trout. You say no, then remember the bag. Inside, folded in a damp racing page, is a small painted fish on a loop of nylon, its red speckles bright as nail varnish, its green and blue flanks catching the strip light. It has been hanging from the line the whole time, as if it were waiting for permission to swim.
She explains that her grandad fishes the reservoir every Sunday and loses a rod on a train about once a month. He always says the trout is the one that got away, and he keeps trying to catch it again. She says this without any drama, the way you might mention the weather.
You do the paperwork. You hand over the rod, the bag and the fish, and you ask her to tell him the 17:40 is still the best train for the reservoir. She tucks the trout into her blazer pocket and walks towards the barrier. Behind her the reel gives one last click, the way a line goes taut when something has finally decided to bite.
