Double chain anklet tattoo with heart charm
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a double chain anklet wraps around the ankle, with a heart-shaped charm hanging from a thin chain at the side. The oval links are outlined and shaded to suggest metal, and the charm has soft grey shading. The bare foot is photographed at an angle against a pale wall and floor.

The anklet came down to me in a biscuit tin under a pile of wet towels, which is how most things reached the back kitchen at Gull Rest. Mother said the lady from Leeds had left it in number four, the one who stayed the whole of August and paid in half-crowns. Two chains, fine as cotton thread, with oval links that had been bright once and had gone soft and grey in the sea air. A heart hung from one side on its own little chain, no bigger than my thumbnail, with initials I couldn't read without my glasses.

I polished it with metal cleaner on a tea towel every evening after the last plate was dried, because my hands needed something to do while the wireless played dance bands through the wall. Mother wanted it posted to Leeds. I kept finding reasons not to. The post office on the front had a queue that reached the bins, and the postmistress, Mrs Carlow, made every parcel sound like a confession.
In September a letter came first, in a careful hand, asking whether a chain had been found. I wrote back that it had, that it was safe, and that the heart was lighter than it looked. Then on the last Sunday of the month I wore it down to the shingle, tucking the charm under my heel so it wouldn't catch on the stones.
The tide was going out fast, leaving the rock pools full of sky. I stood with one foot in the wet sand and watched the two chains lie flat, and the little heart turned over in the light. That's the end of it, then, I thought, and went up the steps to tell Mother the bread was short.
