Fishing scene in an oval frame on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A seated figure fishes from a lakeside bank beneath a tree, with a distant shoreline and small buildings across the water. The scene sits inside an oval rope-style border, with a leafy floral sprig at the base and radiating rays above. The black linework is clean and even, with stippled dots on the figure and lake, and the image is in black and white.

The line goes slack and you know before you feel it that the lake has taken another bait, because the reed-cut water has stopped its small talk. Your father used to say the lake keeps a ledger. Every hook you cast is an entry, every fish you pull is a payment, and the fish are never the ones who owe. You sit on the bank under the old plane tree with your bare feet in the mud, watching the ripples thin out toward the far shore where the potters' houses stand like stacked loaves.

Across the water, smoke rises from the kilns in a thin grey thread, and you can see the women carrying jars down to the landing. Nobody there has fished this lake since the spring flood took the boats. They say the water is haunted. You say the water is only hungry, and that is a different thing, because hunger can be fed.
The line jerks hard. You pull, hand over hand, and the rod bows like a reed in wind. Something silver breaks the surface, turning once in the sun, and then it is only a branch, dragged up dripping with weed and a single clay bowl with a crack down its side. Inside the bowl is a folded square of papyrus, dry as a leaf, with your name written in a hand you do not know.
You sit with it in your lap until the light changes. Then you untie the twine on your own net, cast the rod out again, and leave the papyrus to the lake's keeping. Some debts are not yours to settle, and you have a feeling the lake has only begun to write you in.
