Five arrows down the forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Five arrows are arranged in a vertical cluster on the forearm, each with a different fletching and head shape, joined by fine single lines. The linework is thin and even, with solid black fills on the arrowheads and some of the fletching. The design is in black ink only on a light skin tone, and the composition is centred on the arm with a dark background.

The apples were dropping faster than the pickers could gather them when old Hesketh Vane called his five daughters to the orchard wall. The cottage with the north window stood on the far side of the ridge, empty since the shepherd died, and he meant to give it to whichever girl could shoot an arrow over the crest. Nobody in the valley had ever managed it. The wind off the moor always turned the shafts sideways.

The eldest went first, a rook-feathered shaft with a flat iron head, and it wobbled and dropped into the hazel. The second, Marrin, had fern fronds bound along hers, and it caught the wind for a breath before tumbling into the beck. The third and fourth reached the ridge's edge and no further. Each time, Hesketh shook his head and reached for another apple. Only Wren, the youngest, had not yet drawn her bow.

She had spent the morning at the sacking pile, tying thread between the five arrows, one knot each, so they lay in a fan along the wall. When her sisters asked what she was doing, she said the wind would not carry one arrow well, but it might carry five if they were not left to argue. She loosed them together. They rose as a single line, the thread humming between the shafts, and went over the crest like a flock of starlings turning as one.

Next morning Hesketh climbed the far side of the ridge and found all five arrows lying in the doorway of the north-window cottage, heads pointing inward, thread still knotted tight. He carried them back down and laid them on the kitchen table. The thread was the one thing he could not explain, so he sat down beside it, lit his pipe, and let his daughters argue about who had won.
