Arrow on the forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black arrow with a feathered head, dotted accents along the shaft and a looped tail, drawn in fine black linework. Solid black fills on the feathers and minimal shading give it a crisp, graphic look. The arrow sits centrally on the forearm, with a grey top and a brick wall in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The wind off Vell has been pushing the fishing boats back into harbour for three days, and you are the only one on the quay still watching the headland. Your uncle says the arrow is a fool's errand. Your grandmother swore it came down on the far side of Scarrow Point, feathers first, the day the mail boat went missing.

You take the path the goats use, past the chapel with its tin roof and the drystone wall that somebody rebuilt in a single summer. The shaft is easy to miss in the bracken. Its fletching has gone grey with salt, but the three feathers still hold their shape, and where the tail loops back on itself, a pair of small dots marks the place a child once pressed a thumb into the wood to claim it.
Tied under the shaft with waxed thread is a folded square of oilcloth no bigger than a playing card. You unfold it on the rock with cold fingers. The handwriting is your grandmother's, slanting hard to the right as if written in a gale: Tell them the boat was never lost, only moored on the other side.
You stand on the point and look across the sound. Somewhere past the grey line of the skerries, a light flickers once and goes dark. You pocket the oilcloth, leave the arrow where it lies, and start back down the goat path before the tide turns and the causeway disappears.
