Arrow tattoo on the upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A vertical arrow runs down the upper arm, with a chevron-feathered head, a shaft broken by dots and small triangles, and a shaded diamond-shaped tip. The linework is fine and black, with stippled dotwork and soft grey shading in the triangles and diamond. The design sits centrally on a light skin tone against a teal fabric background, with a gloved hand visible at the lower right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fletcher's widow had six arrows left when the bell began to ring the wrong hour, and she took the bow down from its nail without asking anyone's leave. Rain ran in small dots down the window. Her son Tomas had climbed the clock stair at dusk to oil the escapement and had not come down.

The city below was asleep except for the lamplighters, who moved from street to street like slow moths. She crossed the square to the foot of the tower and looked up. Each arrow she carried had been made the way her husband taught her: three chevrons cut into the feathered head, a shaft marked with dots for every winter she had waited, small triangles bound in red thread where the cords crossed, and a diamond tip blackened with pitch and ash so that it would hold a true line in a wind.

She drew the bow. The first arrow fell short and rang off the cobbles. The second clipped a gutter and turned end over end into the fountain. The third rose past the lit face of the clock, through the gap where the hands met, and the bell stopped halfway through its note.

Tomas came down the stair with ash on his sleeves, saying a sparrow had built a nest in the gears. She did not tell him she had shot at the clock because she had heard it ringing for his father. She hung the bow back on its nail. Five arrows left, and the bell kept good time after that, though nobody in the street could say why it had ever run fast.
