Five fine line arrows on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Five arrows point downwards across the inner forearm, each with a different fletching pattern, including feather shapes, a dotted shaft and a decorated tail. The linework is thin and mostly uniform in dark ink, with little shading beyond small details in the fletching. The ink is black on skin, and a silver chain bracelet sits above the design against a pale, softly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The arrows came down the sky the year the bell tower on Saltmarsh Reach fell into the tide. Nobody in the fishing villages could say where they had been made, only that each one fell point-first and stood quivering in the mudflats, feathered in patterns no bird had ever worn. Old Maren Tolley said they were messages from the stars that had lost their way, and her grandson said they were just rusted scrap from the orbital mills. They argued about it over the nets every morning.

When the fifth arrow fell, the one with the dotted shaft, it landed beside the child Ines, who was gathering cockles at low water. She pulled it from the silt and saw that the feathers were not feathers at all but fine chains of tiny beads, and the shaft ran with a row of dots like a path marked on a map. She carried it to the village in both hands, and the others gathered around, and no one spoke until Maren reached out and touched the fletching and said, very quietly, that it was pointing to the Hollow Reef.

They went out at the next spring tide, five boats in a line, following the angle of the shafts across the water. At the reef they found a brass ring sunk among the rocks, and through its centre the arrows could be seen lined up exactly, as if they had been aimed at a single point for a very long time. Ines dropped the fifth arrow into the ring, and the water went still, and then the whole village heard the bell tower of Saltmarsh Reach ring once, far beneath the sea, as if it had been waiting only to be asked.
