Small feather tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small feather is tattooed on the inner wrist, drawn in fine black lines with soft grey shading along the barbs. The feather sits diagonally, tip pointing down and to the left, with a silver chain bracelet and turquoise bead in the foreground. The background is dark and the lighting is soft, keeping the focus on the skin.

Dearest Ansa, the post-rider came through the Saltmarch gate three days late, missing a boot and most of his temper, but he had kept the feather. He held it up to the guardhouse lamp as if it were a royal seal. It is a grey-brown thing, longer than my hand, its barbs drawn so fine I could count them against the flame, and he had carried it pinned inside his coat since the pass at Oruun.

Queen Ilse sends a feather to every border ford each spring, a heron's flight feather tied with blue thread to a stake. Its lean tells the wardens which way the currents will run before the thaw. Tobin's feather was meant for the Harrow ford, but it came to us lying flat across the parcel, tip pointing down and to the left, toward the drowned village of Harrow Mere. Old Pell said it was a bad omen. I said it was a map, and maps are never wrong, only late.
So at first light I took the surveyor's chain from its hook, the one with the turquoise bead Pell's wife knotted into the last link, and walked the Harrow road alone. The ford had shifted in the night. The stake was gone, swallowed by the brown water, and in its place the reeds were bowing toward the drowned roofs. Caught in them, pale against the mud, was a second feather, the same length and the same lean, as though the heron had dropped a pair.
I wound the chain once round my wrist and stood there until the mist lifted off the Mere. Then I turned back toward the upper road and left the feather where the wind could read it. Write to me when the thaw has passed. Tell Pell he was right about the omen and wrong about everything else.
