Three birds in flight on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Three small black silhouettes of birds in flight sit on the inner wrist, with the middle bird slightly lower and larger than the two flanking it. The linework is thin and solid with no visible shading, and the ink is black against the skin tone. The hand is shown palm up against a dark green, blurred background, with a layered silver chain bracelet at the wrist and teal and grey nails.

In the salt marsh village of Hollin Reach, the old ferrywoman kept three swallows in a cage of willow withies, and she fed them crumbs from her apron every morning before the mist lifted off the reeds. The birds had been caught as fledglings in the spring the river flooded the chapel, and they had never learned to fear the open sky, only the bars that were not there anymore.

One autumn the ferrywoman grew too stiff to work the punt. Her grandson Tobin, who was nine and afraid of deep water, was sent to row the far crossing instead. On the first morning he lost an oar in the current and nearly went over the side. Above him the three swallows wheeled out of the willows, dipped low over the black water, and kept circling until his boat drifted back into the shallows where the reeds could hold it.
He told his grandmother that night. She only nodded and opened the cage door, which she had never done before. The middle bird went first, then the other two, and they climbed away over the marsh in a loose line. Tobin waited for them to come back. They didn't, not that season, but when the ice broke in spring a single swallow came skimming over the reeds, and it flew with its wings held very still, the way a bird does when it is only resting its wings for the next long crossing.
