They came up the Halse road the week the snow went off the top of the pass, five men in dark suits, walking abreast as though the track had been laid for them. Old Marta at the inn put her hand on the bar and counted them twice. Five, and every one with his eyes hidden behind black glass, though the sun had gone behind the ridge an hour before.

They asked for nothing but the back room and a jug of water. The tallest, who had a voice like a gate on a cold hinge, said they were waiting for a debt to be paid. Nobody in Halse owed anybody a debt that size. Still, the village men took their hats off to them, the way you do for weather, and went home to bar their doors.
Marta's grandson Piet was nine and afraid of nothing, so he took a lamp out to the yard at dusk and saw what the others had missed. The five men stood in the lamplight and threw no shadows at all. Their outlines lay on the cobbles as flat and black as cut card, and when he lifted the lamp higher the shapes only grew sharper.
He told no one what he had seen. He carried the water jug out instead, set it down beside the tallest man's polished shoe, and went back to bed. In the morning the back room was empty and the snow had come down again over the pass, smooth and unmarked, as if no one had ever walked there at all.
