Figure and lyric banners on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo on the inner forearm shows a dark-haired figure seen from behind, wrapped by three ribbon banners carrying text. The outlines are bold and the banners are filled with flat bands of green, blue, pink and yellow, while the figure is shaded in muted blues and greys. The tattoo sits centrally on the forearm against a plain light background, with a hand and red nails visible at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Mags,

You'll have heard by now what the parish did at the bottom of Thorne Lane, and I want you to know I didn't throw anything. Mother says I stood there like a post. She's right, but a post is still a thing that stays put, and I stayed put for the lot of them, which is more than the rest of the village managed.
The keep is still standing, though nobody has had a roof on it since the Hallam fire. Father used to say the walls would outlast the grudges, and for once he was wrong about the stone. I've taken to sitting on the broken stair where the sun comes through the arrow slit and the light lands in a long yellow bar across the flags. The lads from the mill climb up here on Sundays to dare each other across the gap. Last week one of them asked me why I wasn't frightened of falling. I told him I'd already fallen, in front of everyone, and the ground hadn't got any harder.
Mrs Tennant came up the hill this morning with a basket of eggs and a face like a closed door. She didn't say much. She left the eggs on the step and a folded paper under the cloth, and when I opened it there was only a list in her cramped hand: every name who'd picked up a stone that night, and beside each one, the thing they'd said to me. Nine names. Hers wasn't on it, which I'm still turning over.
I've decided I'll go down to the square on market day and walk past the stalls with my head up. Let them look at my back. I'd rather be seen going somewhere than seen standing still.
Your loving sister, Nell
