Singer silhouette in a black diamond

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black diamond frames a light-skinned silhouette of a singer in profile, with one hand raised to a microphone on a stand. The figure is rendered as negative space against the black fill, with little interior shading. The design is in black ink only and sits centred within the diamond on the skin.

The lift at Sorrel House had been broken since March, so Mrs Adebayo and I took the stairs together, one floor a day, arguing about whose turn it was to carry the shopping. Nobody on the ninth floor owned a record player that worked, which is why the voice coming up the stairwell that October stopped us both on the landing.

It came through the diamond-shaped window on the half-landing, the one with wire mesh set in its glass like a net. Below, in the car park, somebody had dragged out the old chrome stand from the community hall's Tuesday karaoke, with a dented microphone clipped on top. A young woman in a borrowed cardigan had her hand wrapped round it, and she sang with her eyes shut, as though the tarmac were a stage somebody had promised her.

Mrs Adebayo said the song was her husband's, a tune from before the estate went up, when the whole hill was fields and the Crown had a dance floor. I didn't know the words. I knew the way the singer held the last note, the way a kettle holds its breath just before it clicks off.

The next evening the stand was gone and so was the girl. Someone had propped a black card diamond cut from a delivery box in the window instead, and when the sun dropped behind the flats it threw a shape through the mesh onto the wall: one raised hand, one bent head, the mic as bright as a nail. I went down the stairs humming the wrong words, and I didn't mind that they were wrong.
