Five ornamental lotus designs in black
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows five separate floral designs arranged across a white background, each a stylised lotus or flower head with layered petals, scrolling stems and small leaves. The linework is solid black with detailed inner patterning, including dots, teardrop shapes and fine scrolls, and the designs appear as filled silhouettes with negative space. The composition is evenly spaced with no shading or colour, so the motifs can be read individually.

The master gave me four days to paint the lotus columns before the flood, and a clay pot of blue that had already thickened in the heat. I was the only apprentice who could draw a teardrop without a cord, so the work fell to me, and I did not sleep much that week. Each morning I climbed the scaffold in the granary hall with my reed brush behind my ear and the stone still cold under my palms.

The design was simple to say and hard to do: a lotus head opening in layers, each petal filled with dots and small teardrops, a scroll for a stem that dropped down the pillar and curled back on itself like a fern unrolling. My hand learned the rhythm by the third day. Dot, dot, teardrop, a breath, then the next. Behind me the other apprentices counted the grain measures aloud to keep their hands steady, and the lime dust settled on everything, on the bread, on the water jars, on the back of my neck.
On the fourth evening I found my mistake. The outermost petal on the third column curled inward where it should have flared, a small error that would catch the lamplight all year for anyone who looked up. I sat with the brush dripping and waited for the master to shout. Instead he came up the ladder slowly, studied it for a long time, and said that a lotus drawn perfectly would only remind people of the first lotus, and that a hall needed one flower leaning toward the door.
So I left it. When the flood came and the river lay brown against the granary steps, I stood at the far end of the hall with the lamps lit. The blue petal turned toward the doorway, and every person who came in out of the water looked up at it first.
