Four black ink lotus flower designs
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
Four separate drawings of lotus flowers in black ink on white backgrounds, arranged in a grid. Each design uses dense, fine linework with dotwork shading, layered petals and decorative mandala-like patterns in the centre. The drawings are all black and white, with no colour, and each is centred within its own square panel.

Nell Ashdown had worked nights at Carrow Cottage Hospital for eleven years, and she knew the building by its noises: the lift that sighed on the third floor, the drip pump that clicked every four minutes like a clerk counting coins. On the night the mere froze, a porter brought her a bundle of drawings tied with garden string. They had been left behind by a retired draughtsman called Mr Oakes, who had gone to his daughter's in Whitby without his sketchbook.

Every sheet showed the same flower. Its petals stacked like the tiers of a bell, and at its heart sat a small ring of dots that never quite closed.
Mr Oakes had written on the back of the last one in pencil: The Reed Mother asks for one petal for every night you sit awake with someone. Finish the flower and she lets you go home.
Nell did not believe in Reed Mothers. She believed in tea at three and in the particular quiet of a bed where someone had stopped turning over. But she counted the petals on the sheets, forty-one of them, and then she counted the nights she had sat up with Mrs Pryce in bay two, and the number matched. She drew the forty-second petal at the nurses' station with a biro, under the lamp, and her hand did not shake. When she placed the last dot in the centre, the pump down the corridor stopped clicking, and in the morning the day staff found Mrs Pryce awake and asking for toast.
