Lotus mandala with dotted chain drops
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical lotus flower built from layered petals, each filled with scrollwork, line patterns, and stippled shading. Fine dotted lines radiate outward from the top, and a dotted chain with small diamond-shaped drops hangs from the base. The drawing uses black ink and grey tones on a plain white background, with the dense stippling concentrated around the lower petals.

You keep the beads in a biscuit tin on the sewing-room windowsill, sorted by size into jam jars, and the bride's gown is due on Thursday. Mrs Haddow wants the bodice worked like the lotus carved over the chapel door, petals stacked one inside another, and you have spent three nights drawing it out on greaseproof paper with a ruler and a blunt pencil. Your hands know the pattern better than your head does.

The trouble is the drops. She wants a dotted chain swinging from the waist, each link a seed pearl, ending in little jet diamonds that will catch the light when she crosses the high street. Mr Pell at the ironmonger's says jet is for funerals. You tell him brides have worn worse. He laughs, buys you a cup of tea from the urn, and never once asks what you are making.
On Wednesday night the rain comes sideways across the market square and you stitch until the lamp begins to hiss. Somewhere past two you realise the stippling you have been fretting over is simply where the light gives out, the dark thickening along the lower petals as the flower opens. You unpick a diamond, start again, and let the chain sag in a deliberate curve, the way a necklace hangs when the person wearing it has stopped holding her breath.
Thursday morning, Mrs Haddow stands on the stool while you pin the last drop. She looks down at the lotus stitched over her hip and asks whether it is meant to be a flower. You tell her it is a window. She doesn't understand, and you don't explain, but you tuck the spare jet into your apron pocket anyway, the way you always do, for the next one.
