Five outlined hearts on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of an open palm, showing a tattoo of five small outlined hearts arranged in a slightly curved vertical row on the inner wrist. The thin black outlines are crisp, with light grey shading inside each heart. The hand fills the upper frame against a dark background, with the tattoo placed centrally on the lower half of the wrist.

The paper chain had nine hearts when Nan folded it across the oilcloth, and by the time the kettle began to tick there were only five. The scissors had gone through the wrong crease, and two hearts had dropped to the lino and been swept up with the crumbs. She didn't swear. She just pinched the survivors apart with her thin fingers and laid them in a curve on the table, smallest at the top, the way the gulls sit along the harbour wall before weather comes in off the sea.

Our family had one rule about the paper chain. You could cut it wrong once. The second time, you had to tell the truth about what you had been thinking while your hands wandered. I was eleven and had been thinking about the Ferris wheel at the end of the pier, and I said so. She laughed until she had to sit down on the step by the back door, and then she told me the wheel had been closed since the summer her brother fell from it, which was the first time I heard that story and not the last.
The five hearts went into the bottom drawer with the ration books and the brass key to a flat we had long since given up. When the house was cleared, I found them still stuck to a square of card, faded to the colour of weak tea. I counted them twice, the way she used to count change, and kept the card in my coat pocket all the way home on the bus.
