Black and grey photograph of a fine line curled symbol tattooed on the inner wrist of a hand held loosely in front of a soft blanket.

Small curled symbol on inner wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is photographed in soft monochrome with the fingers loosely curled and the palm turned slightly away from the camera. A small black tattoo of a looping, curled symbol sits on the inner wrist, drawn in thin, even linework with no shading. The plain bedding behind the hand keeps the focus on the small design.

Mr Dawe had kept the galley of the coaster Harriet Lowe for nineteen years, and in all that time nobody had asked why the cat was allowed to sleep on the flour sacks. The cat was grey, with a tail that curled at the tip like a question mark that had changed its mind. Dawe called him Sunday, because that was the day he had come aboard, wet and furious, in a coal sack.

On the third night out from Hull the weather turned and the stove door swung open at every roll. Dawe was kneading dough by the light of a paraffin lamp when the mate came down the ladder, dripping, shouting that the forward hold had shifted. Dawe did not look up. He pressed his thumb into the loaf and drew a loop, then a tail that folded back on itself, the same mark his mother had pricked into the bread she sent to the chapel sale.

Sunday leapt from the flour onto the table, sniffed the mark, and sat on it with great dignity while the ship groaned around them. When the mate came back an hour later, soaked to the skin, he found the cook slicing bread as calmly as a vicar and the cat purring on the one loaf that had not gone across the floor.

Dawe handed him the knife. "Eat that first," he said. "The sea's always hungrier than we are."
