Small outline heart on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline sits on the inner wrist, drawn in thin, single black linework with no shading or fill. The forearm and open hand fill the frame against a plain light background, shown in black and white. The tattoo is a small, centred detail near the wrist crease.

The frost has got into the water trough again, so you break it with the heel of your hand because the axe is at the far end of the yard and the ewes will not wait. Mr Tolland's collie watches from the barn door with the patience of something that has seen a great many fools. You are twenty, you came up from Dorset in October for the wages and the quiet, and you have learned that quiet on a hill farm in February is mostly the sound of your own breath.

Behind the hay barn a feed sack is pinned to the wall, and someone has drawn on it in red chalk: a heart with a crooked lower edge, and beneath it a name that has been half rubbed away. Tolland says it was his daughter's, before she married a man in Carlisle and stopped writing. He does not say it with any sadness. He says it the way he says the weather, and then he asks whether you have fed the gimmer in the north pen.
On the last night of the month the snow comes in sideways, and a lamb born under the stairs will not take the teat. You sit by the range with it wrapped in your jumper, rubbing its cold legs, and you trace the chalk outline on the sack with your thumbnail while the kettle ticks. When Tolland comes down at four he finds you asleep in the chair with the lamb sucking at the wool of your sleeve, and he stands in the doorway a long while before he switches off the light.
In March the rain takes the chalk off the sack. You do not replace it. Instead you draw a small heart in the tally book beside the day the lamb stood up, one thin line and no fill, and when Tolland sees it he taps the page twice with his pencil and says the book will want a new ledger by lambing.
