Five small birds on a shoulder
Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
Five small bird silhouettes sit in a loose diagonal line across the shoulder and upper back, with the largest near the top right. The birds are rendered in soft grey shading with simple, minimal outlines. The ink is black and grey, set against warm skin with a hairline and a patterned top at the edge of the frame.

The lift was out again, so I took the stairs with the shopping, counting landings the way Mrs Okafor counted her rosary, under her breath and without mercy. Eleven floors. By the ninth I could hear the birds before I saw them, a chattering from the gutter above the walkway where the swifts had nested since the year the block went up.

Dev from flat 42 said there were always five of them, and that they flew down the face of the building in a line, as if someone had drawn them with a ruler and then lost the ruler. I told him swifts don't come back to the same spot twice, that the same birds don't return. He said that was exactly why he counted them.
The council letter came in March, pinned to the noticeboard with a drawing pin that rusted into the paper. Phase two, it said, as though we were a sum they had already worked out. On the Sunday Dev carried a flask up to the roof and we stood by the parapet while the sky went the colour of weak tea.
Four swifts lifted off the gutter and turned over the car park. The fifth hung back, dropped low over the bins, then climbed hard after the others and caught them at the top of the wind. Dev didn't say anything. He just tipped his cup at the sky, and I counted, and I got five again.
