Flock of small birds across the upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a small flock of seven or eight black bird silhouettes in flight, arranged in a gentle curve across smooth skin. The birds are solid black shapes with simple outlines and no internal detail. The soft, low-contrast lighting and grey tones keep the focus on the tattoo, which sits toward the top right of the frame.

They came every October, low over the wire at dusk, bending together into a long curve as if someone had drawn them with a single stroke of a pen. Teodor, who mended the lamps and believed most things, said they carried names over the hill to the valley towns. I told him birds did not need passports. He said that was exactly why they were trusted.
That evening the last bird fell behind the others, wings working hard, and I watched it lose height above the barrier. I did not reach for the stamp. I lifted the arm myself, the way you would for a car you already knew, and the bird dropped through the gap at the height of my shoulder and was gone over the dark side of the valley.
In the book I wrote seven, and under it, nothing to declare.
