Five swallows in flight on ribs
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a woman seen from behind, with a towel held against her front and her hair falling over one shoulder. Five small solid black swallow silhouettes in flight are tattooed in a loose diagonal cluster on her side, just below the shoulder blade. The tattoo is in black ink on warm skin, set against a plain light background.

The swallows had gone south a week early, and Ada Penhallow counted the empty mud cups under the gallery rail twice before she believed it. Her father would have called it a bad sign. She climbed the iron stairs every evening after that, trimming the wick and polishing the lens with a chamois until her knuckles cracked. The paraffin smelled of pennies. Below her the fog came in off the bar like wet wool, and the bell on the buoy answered itself in a flat, lonely note she had long since stopped hearing.
Then, on the third night of the gale, five dark shapes came hard out of the north-east, low over the water, bucking against the wind as though it were a hand pressing them down. They struck the glass of the lamp room and hung there, wings going like pages, before they dropped to the rail and folded themselves into the shelter of the ironwork. Ada opened the shutter with numb fingers and let them in.
By dawn the wind had dropped. A grey shape was nosing through the channel towards the rock, the relief boat with the doctor and the new paraffin, and the swallows lifted all at once and went out over the water to meet it. Ada watched them until they were specks. Then she took the logbook from its hook and wrote, in the careful hand she had learned by copying her father's, Five swallows, wind north-east, all accounted for.
