Three birds tattoo on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of three simple black bird silhouettes sits on the upper back, close to the left shoulder blade as seen from behind. The birds are shown in flight at slightly different angles and are rendered as solid dark shapes with little internal detail. The woman wears a white lace bandeau top and has her blonde hair in a side braid, against a pale, softly lit wall.

You hear the gulls before the ferry, which is how Ailsa always said it would go. The boat is late again, the Sound is the colour of wet slate, and you have been standing at the end of the pier since the tide turned, counting birds. Three swallows came in low across the water an hour ago, wings stiff, heading for the lee of the old kelp shed, and you took them as a sign of nothing but weather.

Ailsa's letter is in your coat pocket, folded four times, the paper gone soft at the creases from being opened and shut on the crossing from the mainland. She wrote that she would be back before the swallows left. She wrote it in pencil, and that is how you knew she meant it, because Ailsa only used pencil for things she could still rub out.
The ferry comes round the point with its lights already lit. Three men lean on the rail, none of them anyone you know. Above the masts the swallows lift off the shed roof and turn south together, wings sharp against the cloud. You follow them out over the water and keep counting until you cannot tell bird from weather.
Then the ramp drops and a figure comes down it with a canvas bag, walking the way she always did, as if the island were a joke she was still in on. You don't wave. You simply stop counting and let the last of the light go where the birds went.
