The fair pitched on the water meadow outside Wellow for three nights, and by the second evening you knew every bolt of the gallopers by its squeal. Ray Cottle, who ran the organ wagon, had five brass horns bolted to its roof and never let anyone else touch the paper rolls. You were nine, and he only let you carry them because your mother sold toffee apples on the next pitch and owed him a favour.

On the last night the organ jammed on a roll punched with five treble clefs, and all five horns shrieked at once. Ray swore, cranked it backwards, and the wheel in the middle of the wagon began to turn the wrong way, slow as a clock hand. You grabbed the spindle without thinking and it stung your palm. The card spun, and the five clefs swung out on their wires like the spokes of a broken star, each one looping round the centre where the spiral was, until the whole wagon seemed to breathe.

The tune that came out was one nobody had heard in forty years. The old women at the toffee stall stopped chewing. Ray sat down on an upturned crate, took off his cap, and said his father had cut that roll by hand in a Bristol back kitchen, and had never once let it be played in daylight.

In the morning the field was empty and the lorries had gone. You kept the card wrapped in your jumper. Where the wagon had stood there were only five faint rings pressed into the wet grass, curling in towards a single point, as if something had been turning there all night and had only just stopped.
