Looping calligraphic flourish design
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a single abstract design made of looping black strokes that form a stylised knot or fleur-like shape, with a tapering diagonal line through the centre. The lines have varying thickness, like brush calligraphy, and finish in a spiral curl at the bottom. It is set on a plain white background in black ink only, with the design centred in the frame.

Mr Pickering wants the Gallopers' wagon lettered before the Saturday opening, and the old gold leaf has flaked to nothing. He gave me the brushes in a tin that smells of linseed. I have done the capitals already, the big square ones that have to read from the road. The flourishes are harder. You cannot think them. You let the hand go loose and trust the bristle.
Thursday. The loop on the S took me three goes. Joe Tarrant leaned on the step with his pipe and said a sign-writer's hand is only as honest as his breathing, so I held my breath and drew the stroke out in one pull, thinning it as it ran, the way the wagon's shadow thins on the cobbles at four o'clock. Then the long tail, dropped down through the middle of the letters like a plumb line, tapering to a hair. Joe said that was the part that counted, the bit that goes nowhere on purpose.
Saturday. The curl at the foot finished it. I wound it round twice, tight as a watch spring, and it sat there under the lamp as if it might uncoil if I looked away. The fair opened at six. Children stood beneath the name and tried to read it aloud, got it wrong, and laughed. I stayed behind to clean the brushes and signed the panel in the corner, small, where nobody looks, the way Joe taught me.
