Five watercolour sea turtles
Colour · Flash
The sheet shows five sea turtles in different poses, some swimming upward and others diving, with small bubble marks around them. The turtles are painted in loose watercolour washes with soft edges and visible wet-edge variation. Each turtle uses a different palette of green, purple, blue or brown, and they are spaced across the page on a plain white background.

Gather round, you lot at the back, and mind the sawdust. Five turtles came up out of the harbour the summer Mr Ambrose brought his travelling fair to Porthcurno, and the first thing they did was ruin the coconut shy. Nobody could tell which was the senior. The green one wanted to dive, the purple one wanted to go up for air, and the brown-speckled little fellow simply wanted his breakfast. So they argued, the way turtles do, slowly, with long pauses in which the bubbles rose and popped like applause.

Mrs Pettifer, who kept the candyfloss, said they should be sent back out with the tide. But old Ambrose had a rule about the sea: whatever it sends you, you feed. So he rolled a barrel of lettuce down the pier, and the turtles followed it in a loose wet procession, bumping each other, paddling in circles, leaving a trail of small silver bubbles across the water like someone had scattered sixpences.
And here is the thing I always tell the children. By the end of the week the turtles had stopped arguing. The green one took the diving, the purple one took the air, and the little brown one took the lettuce, and between them they were never once in the same place at the same time. When the fair packed up on the Sunday they were still out there beyond the breakwater, five blurred shapes sinking and rising, painted by the water itself.
So if you ever find yourself with more than one way forward, and no one to tell you which is right, remember the turtles. Then go and get your candyfloss before Mrs Pettifer sells the last of it.
