Flaming heart, eye and roses flash sheet

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A framed flash sheet showing a dark heart with an eye above it, wrapped in orange flames and pierced by a dagger. Five red roses with green leaves sit across the lower heart, and skulls decorate the top corners of the border. The bold black outlines, radiating sunburst and aged beige background give it a classic printed poster look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The roses were already in flower when the tinsmith came up the lane with his box of painted hearts, and the old women stopped shelling beans to watch him pass. Nobody in Alcor bought hearts from strangers. Still, Inés the widow opened her gate when he asked for water, because her garden was the only one on the hill where the roses grew in a ring around a dark stone, and a man who wanted to rest in that shade would have to be let in.

He sat under the wall and talked about the far towns he had seen, the sea he had crossed, and the woman he meant to marry once he had enough coin. Inés listened and poured him wine. Each time he spoke of the woman, the shutter on the upper window swung a little, though there was no wind. He noticed nothing except that the roses leaned toward him. He laughed and said roses were like dogs, they always knew who was afraid.

That night the flames came up from the tin in his box, though the lid was shut, and a single eye opened above them, pale as a dish. It looked at him without blinking. By morning he had told Inés everything: the other woman in the next village, the coin he had taken from the priest's box, the three hearts he had sold that were not true. A dagger had come down into the soil beside his bed without a sound, and roses had already grown up around its handle.

He left at first light with an empty box. Inés never pulled the blade out. The old women say it is still there under the ring of roses, and that anyone who digs for it will find a heart the colour of old wine, and that the roses will not let them keep it unless they bring the truth first.
