Hooded reaper with skull coins on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A hooded grim reaper with a skull face stands at the centre of the design, one hand held out palm up. Wispy smoke or light lines curl around the figure, and three coins with skull faces sit at the lower edge. The shading is smooth and detailed, in black and grey with soft highlights, and the composition fills the upper arm from shoulder to elbow.

The coins were already lying on the flat stone when I came up through the bracken, three of them, skull-side up, as neat as a hand of cards somebody had forgotten to finish. Mother always said the edge of Hollin Wood was no place for a girl with a basket, but the basket was for the charcoal, and the charcoal was for Father's fever, and the fever was not waiting on my manners.

He stood between the birches where the mist was thickest, hood drawn so low I never saw the dark inside it, only the pale glint of teeth when he tilted his head. His right hand was held out, palm up, patient as a gatepost. Old Tam had told us at the alehouse that he did not reach for anyone. He waited, and the waiting did the rest.
"They are not mine," he said, and his voice came from somewhere under the leaves. "They are what the parish owes. Each name called from the pulpit leaves one behind, and I only come to collect what is set out for me."
I looked at the coins. Each bore a face I half knew from the churchyard, a grin pressed into the metal like a seal on a letter. I had one purse of my own, three pennies and a button, and I laid them in his palm one by one.
The mist folded back from the path. Behind me the village lamps came on, one window after another, and when I turned for home the smoke that had been curling round his arm slid off into the trees, and I walked the whole way down without once hearing my own name.
