Flock of birds flying in a curve
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows about thirty solid brown silhouettes of birds in mid-flight, arranged in a sweeping diagonal trail that rises from the lower left to the upper right. The birds vary in size and angle, with the largest near the lower centre and the smallest at the upper right edge, which suggests movement and distance. The design is rendered in flat dark brown with no shading or linework detail, set against a plain white background.

I counted from the kitchen window while the kettle went cold. They rose all together, tipped left over the bins, then peeled off in a long crooked line toward the railway cutting, one after another, the last few stragglers catching up in a hurry.

I keep thinking about the way the back of the flock thins out. The first birds are big and close and sure of themselves, and the ones at the end are specks you almost lose against the sky. The lift was out again this morning, so I walked the stairs with the shopping and stopped on the fifth landing to get my breath. Through the wired glass I could see the whole estate laid out, the grey blocks, the cranes past the ring road, and right at the edge of it, a last little bunch of birds bending their path back toward us as if they had forgotten something. I'm going to ring you on Thursday. Keep the kettle on.
